Bartoli, Petkovic win Strasbourg openers

05/17/2011 - Strasbourg, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top seeds Marion Bartoli and Andrea Petkovic were easy first-round winners Tuesday at the $220,000 Strasbourg International tennis event, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.

The French crowd favorite Bartoli blew past 40-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date- Krumm 6-2, 6-1, while Petkovic pasted qualifier and fellow German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-1 at Centre de la Ligue d'Alsace.

The former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli will face Brit Elena Baltacha in the second round, while Petkovic will encounter Zhang Shuai on Wednesday.

Eighth-seeded Czech Lucie Hradecka moved on with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over American qualifier Ahsha Rolle.

In other matches involving Frenchwomen, Alize Cornet held off Indian Sania Mirza 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, the Chinese Zhang topped wild card Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 6-4 and qualifier Stephanie Foretz Gacon grounded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 6-1.

Additional opening-round wins came for Croatian qualifier Mirjana Lucic and the aforementioned Baltacha. Lucic got past American teenager and lucky-loser Christina McHale 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

Fourth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova and fifth-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko will also be among those seeing second-round action on Wednesday. Petrova will be opposed by the wild card Cornet, while Kirilenko will take on Spaniard Laura Pous-Tio.

Another second-rounder on Day 3 will feature three-time Strasbourg champion Anabel Medina Garrigues. The seventh-seeded Spaniard titled here in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

This week's winner will claim $37,000.
